Amino Acids
Amino acids are the basic building blocks from which proteins are synthesized in our body. They are organic compounds, containing an amino group and a carboxyl group. Based on our ability to synthesize them, amino acids are:
- Essential amino acids
- Non-essential amino acids
Essential amino acids cannot be synthesized in adequate amounts and must be supplied in foods. Non-essential amino acids can be synthesized in our body and there is no need to supply them through food.
All proteins in our body - enzymes, hair, skin, or the cells of the internal organs - consist of amino acids. Thus, deficiencies of one or more amino acids could have a wide range of harmful effects upon an individual's health status. This is why following a diet rich in essential amino acids is crucial for good health.
